Her and now husband, Luke, weren’t all that concerned about styling when it came time to planning their wedding, but they knew the venue was going to be key.
While there is a myriad of choice venues in Sydney, many of which boast beautiful views and breezy, outdoor vibes, for Sarah and Luke it all felt a little too same-same. “We didn’t want anything overly fancy,” Sarah tells us, “and we certainly didn’t want the usual, boring function centre food or feel. We wanted something that spoke to us as Luke and Sarah.” Every couple’s wedding should be as individual and unique as the partnership itself, but choosing the perfect venue is only one part of the equation.
For Luke and Sarah, Porteño already held a special place in their hearts, and their relationship. After having their first date and celebrating their first anniversary at the original Cleveland Street restaurant, it only seemed appropriate to choose it as their wedding venue. But what did it really come down to? The food. “It was the food that got us here in the first place,” Sarah says, “and the food that kept us coming back.” Luke and Sarah were really looking for a wedding venue that was more than just a venue.
A self-proclaimed casual couple, they weren’t looking to go over the top with styling and décor, all they wanted was something that spoke to who they were. And their choice paid off; Sarah happily reports that the feedback from their wedding was not only positive, but that most guests felt they’d never been to a wedding like theirs – most particularly the food. Of course, it makes sense a wedding at Casa Porteño is food-focussed; after all it’s their food that made them famous. But as Sarah explains, there’s so much more to a meal at Porteño than the food itself. Rather it was in the way it all came together, an intimate and romantic setting with rustic accents, by a passionate and pleasant team. “The team made us feel so comfortable and relaxed,” Sarah says, “they helped us create things we hadn’t even thought of.” As Sarah goes on to explain, every detail was considered, not only in the set-up of the space, which seated her 127 guests easily without crowding, but even down to the menu testing before the wedding. As with every guest who chooses Casa Porteño for their wedding, Luke and Sarah were invited to the Holt Street Restaurant for a complimentary menu tasting. “We felt like VIPs,” says Sarah, “we even got a personal tour of the wine cellar!” All seemingly small details that mean everything to a couple in the midst of planning a perfect celebration for their closest friends and family.
The Casa Porteño team lives and breathes their work, each individual member deeply passionate about what they do, and it shines through in every detail of the event, from the planning to the plating. “Porteño holds such a special place in our hearts,” Sarah says, “it really was the most amazing night. We’d recommend it to anyone considering having their wedding there.”
